Drainshavebeenplacedperioperativelyduring thyroidsurgery with the notion that doing so would prevents complications like hematoma and seroma formation postoperatively, but the literature lacks any candid data to support this concept. The incidence rates of hematomas requiring surgical intervention are low, reportedly 0–1.5%.1,2 A number of trials have been published to evaluate the need for placing drains in thyroid surgery, and ameta-analysis of 25 randomized trials involving 2,939 patients found no difference in seroma formation between the groups who underwent the procedures with and withoutadrain;however, thedegreeofheterogeneitywashigh (MD 1⁄4 2.30 [–0.73 to 5.34] mL; I2 1⁄4 93%).3 The studies

Ectopic intrathyroidal thymus accompanied by intrathyroidal parathyroid as a cause of a solitary thyroid nodule in adult.

Ectopic intrathyroidal thymic tissue can form a mass lesion within the thyroid gland and has rarely been reported in children. We report a case of intrathyroidal thymus accompanied by an intrathyroidal parathyroid gland in a 29-year-old woman who visited our hospital due to right neck mass diagnosed as metastatic papillary carcinoma by aspiration cytology in an outside hospital. She had a histo...

Life-threatening intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma.

Acute primary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid crisis are characterized by life-threatening hypercalcemia, a rare disorder. A 69-year-old female patient presented at our hospital's neurology clinic with weakness, nausea, vomiting, depression, and hypercalcemia. Treatment of hypercalcemia resulted in no improvement in neurological symptoms, indicating resistance to treatment. Thyroid ultrason...

Intrathyroidal Parathyroid Carcinoma: Report of an Unusual Case and Review of the Literature

Intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma is an exceedingly rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. A 51-year-old African American female presented with goiter, hyperparathyroidism, and symptomatic hypercalcemia. Sestamibi scan revealed diffuse activity within an enlarged thyroid gland with uptake in the right thyroid lobe suggestive of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. The patient underwent t...

Concurrent intrathyroidal thymus and parathyroid in a patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma: a challenging diagnosis

During embryogenesis, the thymus and inferior parathyroid glands develop from the third pharyngeal pouch and migrate to their definite position. During this process, several anatomic variations may arise, with the thyroid being one of the most common sites of ectopic implantation for both organs. Here, we report the case of a young female patient, who underwent total thyroidectomy for papillary...

Utility of 99mTc-Sestamibi SPECT/CT in the Early Localization of Metastatic Parathyroid Carcinoma

Parathyroid carcinoma is very rare, with only a few documented cases. Hence, metastatic lesions are infrequently documented on scintigraphic imaging. We present a case of a 63-year-old female presenting with elevated serum levels of ionized calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) who was referred to our department for a parathyroid scan with SPECT/ CT. Parathyroid scintigraphy showed a focus of i...
